Six Tips for Hosting Weekend Guests
There's something special about having friends spend the weekend. It's nice to make them feel like they're on holiday, even if it's only for a few days. They'll feel instantly relaxed if they sense that you're genuinely excited to have them stay. Here are a few of my tips to make it a bit easier:
- If your guests arrive late in the evening, they've probably missed dinner and will be thrilled by the thought of a simple meal on a tray in front of the fire, or on the veranda in warmer weather.
- With everyone usually coming from a hectic week, most guests are happy just to relax! Let them know that they can do whatever they feel, including hanging out in their room; this takes the pressure off everyone feeling like they have to be entertaining each other all weekend.
- It's always nice to have a few outings planned, like a morning visit to the farmers' market or afternoon at the beach.
- Give your guest's a key so that they can come and go as they please.
- Set up a drinks table in the living room, sunroom or porch late afternoon so that your guests can help themselves to a cocktail before dinner.
- Having all the meals planned ahead of time makes for a stress-free weekend. Make homemade soup or chilli, dips and sandwich fillings ahead of time for quick and easy lunch prep when you and your guests are returning from outings.
